What Year Was It?

What year is this quote referring to?

Religious activity is at a peak, as measured by attendance & offerings. However, religion has absolutely no positive impact on the moral & ethical ills of society, but rather only seems to exacerbate them.

Answer with your selection in the comments box. I’ll post the answer tomorrow afternoon. The person who gets the closest will win a free Deviant T-shirt!

The correct answer is: 793-753 B.C.! This period of time was when Jeroboam II was king in Israel. This period can be found in 2 Kings 14:23-29 in the Old Testament.

That makes Tom Pohl our winner! @Billy_Johnson was close too, so we’ll give him a shirt as well! Direct Message me on Twitter your address and T-shirt size and we’ll ship it out to you ASAP.

This was hands down the best conversation we’ve ever had on BeDeviant.com. Thanks to everyone who played!

I'm going to go with 2008, although I think it could be anywhere in the last 1000 years.

On a different note, you need to bring back some of the old t-shirt designs!

1968, although I would say within the last 100 years, instead of 1000.

You may call me a cheat, but I think I read this paper/book. (I have the PDF) I won't look until after I post this, but I think it was in reference to c. 800 BC

    Im gonna say 1950.

  5. Matthew Starner March 31, 2009 at 11:31 pm #

I'm guessing around 1925, although it's probably earlier.

i would have to go with paul on the date, but i'm going to guess 2000

hmmm… early 90's during the rise of the religious right and megachurches. 1991. if not that, i think it is very recent. backup vote is 2009.

  8. Nick Brannen April 1, 2009 at 3:26 pm #

    1517, you Lutheran you….

  9. Tom Pohl April 1, 2009 at 6:38 pm #

I'm going to have to go with 782.

  10. Tom Pohl April 1, 2009 at 6:40 pm #

    782 BC that is

This is so interesting…. One "group" is very wrong. The other "group" is very right.

  12. dave eickelberg April 1, 2009 at 8:12 pm #

One most only use critical thinking skills to figure out which group is right and which is wrong. Why would Justin post a quote from 2008 and ask what year it was from? That is stupid and pointless.

Clearly the interesting thing about this quote is that it has context for today but it was not written today.

I ask you again, why would he post a quote from today's time period and then ask what year it was from?

I don't know the year…but I know it's not recent. My guess was going to be 1517, but Nick already guessed that – so in honor or Bob Barker, my guess is 1518. Eat it, Brannen!

These are the same critical thinking skills that allow me to predict what will happen on LOST each week.

If I am wrong, I am a fool.

      just got pwned. haha.

    • Paul April 1, 2009 at 9:44 pm #

If he posted a quote talking about the current times, it would force us to reflect deeper upon the matter because we would be personally involved it the claims the statement is making. If the statement relates to 1518, per your guess, then we do not relate as directly because the church back then is not the same as the church now. That was my reasoning.
Your logic makes sense, though, and in all reality is probably the correct guess. But that doesn't make mine "stupid and pointless". That was a childish thing of you to say.

      • Dave Eickelberg April 1, 2009 at 10:37 pm #

Well Paul, I'm a pretty childish person.

You are not stupid, nor are you pointless.

Sarcasm doesn't always work via the internet because you cannot read my nonverbal signals that I would be sending.

So I will do my best to send resend some nonverbal signals…

"why would Just post a quote from 2008 and ask what year it was from? That is stupid and pointless :) lol…."

Does the smiley face and lol help?

        • Paul Hovey April 1, 2009 at 10:41 pm #

          Yeah :) lol
