Top-of-Mind Mondays

  • This is the last week of active posting to It’s been a wild ride, but it’s time for newer, deeper interests! Have you ever needed to transition out of something that was good but not great?
  • CWC was this past weekend. Did anyone here go to it?
  • I had to knock down a bird’s nest by our door three times. Poor little guy kept building it on top of one of our porch lights. Can’t have that birdie flying into the house. Shoo, bird!
  • Just learned that my hometown, West Des Moines, is’s number one best place to raise a family.
  • My wife and I just got into Glee on Netflix. Why did it take me so long to find this show?
  • John Daker with subtitles.
  • I hope you’ll be continue to read my blogging efforts. I’ll be moving permanently to It just makes sense. I don’t work in a church anymore, I’m a dad, a husband, and I wear sweater vests. The “deviant” title just doesn’t fit anymore.
  • Palm Sunday > Easter might be my favorite liturgical season of the year. Tradition seems to be a four-letter word anymore, but the ritual of Holy Week, attached to the Spirit, is a powerful tie to the Church Universal. Does your church celebrate Palm Sunday?
  • Found some old books while sifting through seminary stuff. Two books that forever changed my life: With Christ in the School of Prayer and In Over Our Heads. If you want to get the gist of my seminary education, order and read these two books. Multiple times.

In over our heads. Game-changer. Still in my top 5 (maybe higher) as well. Most of the time I’m thankful for the car wreck it caused, and other times I’d like to step back inside the matrix, and fall in line:). You feel me?

In other news, sorry to see this end. Even if you are more intentionally leaning into the world of the sweater vest, can I say I hope you continue, even if only subversively, to be a deviant? I think that you will, but I might argue, that now more than ever that needs to be part of who you are. Much love brother!

It was a lot of fun teaching people how to make crosses out of their palm branches after church yesterday! It’s a subtle, but good reminder of what Christ did for us in just a few days.

Thanks for the past few years of bedeviant – I know that it has helped me look at things from a different perspective. May God bless you during your transition and going forward!

I’ve been a keen reader and occasional commenter over the past year or so – thanks for all you’ve shared and for much inspiration over that time. Maybe ‘deviant’ is growing a bit old, but ‘radical’, ‘revolutionary’ and ‘subversive’ never grow old! I’m sure you’ll stay in those camps.

Many prayers in this new avenue of service.

I had to do the same thing with a birds nest today. Unfortunately, this time there was an egg in it. I felt pretty bad. In other news, a friend told me that if you put moth balls where the birds are trying to make a nest it will keep them away. (I haven’t tested this theory yet.)
