Three Cultural Values
Name three things that the culture around you values.
For instance, in Iowa we value:
- Working hard (agricultural society filled with farmers).
- Family (byproduct of agricultural society–needed plenty of kinfolk to keep the farm going).
- Fiscal responsibility (debt is largely frowned upon, probably because of #1. If you don’t have the money, you don’t buy it!).
What about your culture? I’m leaving that open-ended on purpose. Your “culture” may be your family, your place of employment, your city, your place of worship, country, lifestyle, etc.
What does your culture value?

I live in Western Washington–three values:
1. Environment/outdoors: regardless of political persuasion, mountains, water, rivers, lakes, wildlife are considered assets. Some see these as assets for development, others for worship, others for recreation, others for basic identity. People here are passionate about their relationship to the environment.
2. Tolerance/diversity: Though this value is often tested, people of many different views and life practices are able to live side by side, and sometimes even in deeper relationship.
3. Opportunity/frontier: Historical connections to the Western/pioneer/frontier ideal of limitless possibility once meant natural resource development–mining, forestry, fishing and railroad. The frontier is shifting and can be seen in the list of prominent business based in Western Washington: Boeing, Weyerhauser, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, etc. The frontier mentality is also reflected as the region is a gateway to Alaska, Canada, and East Asia.
Shoes. Wine. And coffee.
Welcome to corporate America.
I live in Las Vegas – you would expect values here to be money, sex, and personal liberty, and in some circles, that might be accurate. Upon further deliberation, values here are a sampling of values across our nation, since a majority of residents are not Vegas natives.
I would venture that many here value family (low cost of living, entertainment options), opportunity (jobs, enterprise), and the environment (scenery that includes lakes, mountains, and wildlife).
Values in my UU congregation…
1. Reverence for life in all its variety
2. Meaningful interfaith connections
3. Creative life in the here and now
I enjoy your site – just discovered it.
