People Are Asking About the Big Ask Experiment

Wow. It seems quite a few of you feel a similar pull to start asking for things. Big things.

Since yesterday’s post, I’ve heard from some of you who were inspired by the idea:

My big ask is to switch careers and head into full-time ministry!

The Big Ask Experiment looks like a lot of fun.Now I really have an excuse to make people squirm.

Love your heart here. Life is too short and “it never hurts to ask.” You just have to have courage to do it. In the few times I’ve asked, they’ve been life changers.

Reader Amy even wrote a post about how she’s approaching her own Big Ask Experiment:

Basically, the notion is this: every day for one month, ask for something outrageous, out-of-the-ordinary, or just beyond your comfort zone, and see what happens.

I love this idea because I believe too many of us live life safely. We’re afraid to take risks. We’ve settled for what’s come easily. And, ultimately, we’re living sub-standard to the life God has in mind for us.

Check out Amy’s full post here.

I can tell you being a few days into this experiment that it’s not as hard you think. I’ve made a few “big asks” already and they get easier with each one. The terror and inhibition are still there, but confidence is gained with each ask.

If you want to take part, here’s what I’d encourage you to do:

  1. Read the original post here. Get familiar with the concept.
  2. Map out your asks. Write them down. Get them on paper and begin to create this new reality. Something happens once our asks go from postulation to paper.
  3. Start out easy. Get some quick wins under your belt. Hopefully none of your asks will be too easy, but some may be more palatable up front. Put those ones first, and work your confidence up. Put your big big asks towards the second half of your list. Nothing will short circuit your experiment faster than shooting for the starts on day one and getting shot down.
  4. Start asking. I made my first ask yesterday and blocked off time on my schedule for my second one today. I’ve intentionally not given myself a way out.

Will you join in? I know you’ve got asks running around in the back of your brain that you’ve always wanted to throw out there. Now’s your chance. Join the Big Ask Experiment.

Asking daily is an excellent way to overcome fear or doubt and worry. Ask any salesperson.

Having a mixture of simple and complex asks is also a good plan. I've found that a number of smaller asks prepares the way for larger asks.

God wants to be involved in this whole process too, even correlating our belief with our asking. I've heard it said, “What would we ask if we 'really' believed God was here, right now?”

Asking daily, whatever the size of the ask and whatever the outcome, is a good habit to develop. Glad to join you.

Gordon … Love that question. I think most of us could stand to ask that more than saying things like, “I'm just waiting on God” or “If it's God's will….”

    Great comment.
