Making Ideas Happen Spiritually Speaking

I’ve made it no secret that I’m a huge fan of Making Ideas Happen by Scott Belsky. It’s easily the best business book I’ve read in the past five years–maybe ever. So when I read this passage in my devotions this morning, my mind immediately jumped to the action method philosophy. Read, from Evelyn Underhill’s The Spiritual Life:

We are the agents of the Creative Spirit in this world. Real advanxe in the spiritual life, then, means accepting this vocation with all it involves. Not merely turning over the pages of an engineering magazine and enjoying the pictures, but putting on overalls and getting on with the job. The real spiritual life must be horizontal as well as vertical; spread more and more as well as aspire more and more.

If that doesn’t scream, “Get off your spiritual duff and do something!” then I don’t know what does. Sometimes God is in the quietly clasped hands of a praying mother. Sometimes he’s in the dirt under the fingernails of those same hands after they’ve worked for hours in the garden.

Translation: The higher we reach into the heavens for God, the deeper our feet go into the dirt of the Earth.

PREACH.

Nice. I recently finished “Rework,” which has a similar point of view.

It's interesting for me to think about this “getting things done” mindset and how it relates to the lack of needed mentorship you talked about earlier. I wonder if potential mentors would refer to “getting things done” as the reason why they don't have time to be a mentor?

Along these lines, we should make sure to set aside some time to catch up at Echo. I could see it not working out somehow. But we gotta do it!

This is why I'm confident the Social Media Summit will happen — you're all about getting things done and not being the spiritual bureaucrat.

JLar … Have you ever been through Quest for Authentic Manhood? Goofy title, but I think you would LOVE that class. Deals exactly with what you're talking about. Let me know if you're interested.
