Assumptions (And You Know What Assuming Does)

I was working through some notes this morning for a class I’m teaching later tonight. While preparing, I came across this quote:
Don’t assume the way you are going is God’s way just because it is working.
It was spoken by a professor of mine at Bethel Seminary during a class that rocked my world. This statement–which was given in the midst of a heated discussion on church polity–was an earth-shaker.
How often do we make the assumption that because an endeavor or relationship or program or business is going well it’s blessed by God? I’m not suggesting that God is not blessing a well-to-do venture in our lives, but do we ever stop and ask the question–”God, are you here?”
If you’re anything like me, the answer is “No.”
Success has a way of intoxicating us and shoving God out of the equation. We’re still of that old school mentality that says, “If I am doing well, God is blessing me. If I am not doing well, God is not blessing me.” This is a false (and dangerous) mindset.
Don’t believe me? Ask Job.
As paradoxical as it might seem, sometimes success is the very thing that God does not want for us in certain situations. Sometimes his blessing comes in failure–big time failure. But I don’t know too many people who are willing to accept this. Myself included.
Question: Have you ever been a part of something that was “working” but just didn’t feel right?

Looking back I don't think I have been apart of something like that. But I know being young I have a lot of time. But, I do know exactly what you are saying. I have been apart of a couple of things and quickly moved on because they just did not feel right and there were red flags all over the place. But I have not been apart of something that was going great but completely tanked in the end.
Good quote though
Definitely. The hard part is walking away when no one else understands why.
“If I am doing well, God is blessing me. If I am not doing well, God is not blessing me.' This is a false (and dangerous) mindset.”
- Seriously one of the greatest lies of religion. Surprisingly has been around for way too long. (Don't believe me? Ask Job)
Walking away is never easy. Some people do it because they're quitters. Others, however, do so because they are the most brilliantly focused person on the planet.
The difference between the two is a small, thin line. Would that we all be courageous!
Easy. Successful career. While God was there, it wasn't where he'd have me be. He's used it. No doubt. But he also tossed me into the most challenging, humbling and exciting thing I've ever done…plant a church and become a pastor. And, wow, I totally have no idea what I'm doing…failing daily. So thankful His grace is enough.
For realz. More people need to hear your story! I liked it. . . . . That counts for something, right?
It counts for a lot! All in good time…those who God want to hear the story will hear it…your work inspires me to not be afraid to share it. For realz. Thanks, friend.
