Cultivate & John Maxwell – Separated at Birth?

John Maxwell, legit leadership guru, has a new book coming out. It’s called Everyone Communicates Few Connect. I haven’t read it (it’s not out yet), but I anticipate it will sell well and be a good read.

But a few of my fellow Cultivators noticed something that I posit to you. Could it be that Maxwell’s design team “borrowed heavily” from the Cultivate 09 imaging? You decide:

What do you think? Creative coincidence or design doppelgangery?

My vote goes for Design Doppelgangery! Thanks for the vocab lesson!

Seems like someone ran out of time and stole an idea from someone else.
    or
There is no new idea under the sun.

Hey, Thank you for pointing this out. I'm John Maxwell's blog administrator. We weren't aware of the similarity. (And the design was handled by the publisher.) But I'll definitely pass this info on.

Steph … Awesome that you'd check-in here. Very cool.

Any chance John would be willing to do a give-away with his new book here on BeDeviant.com? I think this would be a fun tie-in!

    Thanks again.

Methinks the publisher got bamboozled by a shady freelancer.

Let's hope it wasn't a freelancer who went to Cultivate! Ack!

Okay, here's the answer: Our publisher's designer says there's a computer program that they used to generate their design. It appears that the designer for Cultivate used the same program. So no evil intent or deception on anyone's part. Just an odd coincidence.

And Justin, contact me after the first of the year. I'm sure I'll be doing all sorts of promos for the release. It'd be fun to work with you. :)

I'm guessing the designers on both teams borrowed from stock…the question is, who paid for the right licensing agreements?

Wow – If the cover desginers didn't think anyone would notice, they're very naive.

I created the cultivate logo…so let me set the record straight.

We did not, never will use a program that spits out a logo. I'm really surprised that a book of this caliber wouldn't have something more tailored and a designer that really gets into the DNA and the essence of the book.

The logo started on paper and pencil, lots of sketches, lots of ideas. When I was putting this concept into the computer, I remembered a font I had stashed away that I used to create the mark., so an argument could be made that the book's designer did the same thing.

The Cultivate logo has been out there for most of the year but certainly possible that they didn't see it. If it were me, I'd create a new jacket design (people do judge a book by it's cover). So Mr. Maxwell if you're listening…give me a call.

What program is it exactly that he used? I've actually not heard of something like that.

I find it really sad that you felt it necessary to “blog” your question without 1st having the courtesy to contact John's publisher or staff and have a conversation about the logo.

Why is it that Christian's are so quick to attack other Christian's?

While TN had not seen nor copied the Cultivate logo, they are changing the cover at John's request. I hope you are as quick to post this positive step as you were to post the negative.

I have posted my phone number so that if anyone has a question they can contact me directly. I am John's assistant.

I think that shows a lot of integrity on John's part, which is to be expected. Honestly, I think it will end up giving him something stronger. In fact my offer stands, especially in light of this…I'd be happy to help in the redesign of the new cover.

I don't think any harm was intended by asking the question, overall I think asking questions are good. I was actually quite pleased that no one jumped down his (or my) throat and just posed the question without making this an attack.

sheesh! Linda, there was no attack made, and things like this deserve to get pondered. That is, after all, the point of a “blog”
Holy Cow Creative and John Maxwell's assistant weighing in, I'd say this was an interesting post topic, Justin :)
