How is it Possible to Be This Awful?

If this wasn’t so incredibly painful to watch, I might be offended. You figure out why.

Could it be that the token african-american is rapping?

What's worse is that if you watch the other videos on YouTube from this series, this little one doesn't show up on any of them. Just this one. The "rapping" one. Good grief.

: I i just don't even know what to say to that

people used to say that Christian media was behind the times. I think it just sucked, having nothing to do with the times. Thanks to blogs like this and Christians actually taking a stand for things like "Not For Sale" Christian media and cultural impact is finally starting to come up to par.

This show must have been taped in the north east, hence the poor racial ratio. A poor attempt even for then to be "hip with the kids."

I hope those kids were paid well. They look SOOOOOOOOO excited don't they?

Not even gonna touch the cultural disparity.

    ughhh….it hurts to watch that

although I don't specifically remember this episode, I do remember watching this show as a kid. Gonna be honest when I say that I loved this when I was little!! Sorry, but five year olds aren't looking at this from a political context…..there was a good, Bible story, Christ-centered education offered by the donut man! Don't knock his effort!

    • Justin Wise May 24, 2009 at 6:24 pm #

Anytime you can teach kids about Jesus it is a good thing! We agree on this.

      HOWEVER…

Children may not think within a context of culture as children, but as discerning adults we have to ask what this is embedding into the minds and hearts of our little ones.

Wht is the glaring observation? Simply put, all African-Americans can rap. As children watching this program, there is a subtle message being conveyed that could potentially contribute to fortifying stereotypes and racist attitudes farther down the line.

I would have much rather preferred either seeing a more diverse cast or having a Caucasian child do the "rap." This was too glaringly stereotypical to overlook!

this song is frightfully familiar. maybe it is from one of those memories children try to repress ;-)

Wow, that was horrible. Never been a fan of the Donut Man. I wouldn't read too much into it though.

Justin, grow a mustache and get a beret and i think you could be the donut man. think about.it.

    • Justin Wise May 26, 2009 at 5:12 pm #

I SO would be the Donut Man… But I can't grow a beard.

Oh yeah, and I hate the French.

PS – I laughed out loud when I read your comment.

What! Oh my! This should have offended many people. I wonder if they received any mail after this. If that would have happen today I believe it would have been dealt with and harshly.

This will be in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks

OK, something went wrong with my earlier comment… For some reason, it won't let me reply directly to your earlier comment, Justin, that this is the only video with the little African American girl in it.

I clicked on two other YouTube videos from the series (Hallelujah & the Prodigal Son), and each of them had an African American kid in them. In fact, one of them might have been this same little girl. Not sure.

Just FYI. While the crew of kids may not be as diverse as we'd like, at least they didn't bring the girl in JUST for the rap song. :)
