An App for Everything … Even Church Signs

I’m not sure what to make of the church sign below.

On one hand you have a church that’s willing to take the risk and use a clearly identifiable piece of pop culture in their branding.

On the other hand, well, the sign looks like it was drawn by the church youth group.

I’m torn. What do you think?

If the youth group did that sign, I'm very impressed. Not every congregation has a ginormous budget, much less for professionally designed and printed temporary signage. I like it a lot actually.

I'm not sure I'd call it a risk. There are many who see this type of work as a problem within the church. instead of being innovative and creative in their own right, so many churches just slap some Jesus on some piece of pop culture and hope it makes them look relevant.

its how we get things like “Got Jesus?” shirts, GodTube and movies like Sunday School Musical.

I know not every church has a great communication budget, but things like this make the church seem like we're trying to catch up to the rest of the world.

I like the creativity for sure. The sign, to me, doesn't appear to jump out at me though. That would be especially true if I was a passer by; the font palette and colors would make it difficult for me to appreciate at vehicle speed.

yeah, I'm torn too. good concept. maybe a few tweaks to it and it wouldn't look as home-made. I do agree with Chase on the budget thing tho…

    I like it !

I think that if we want to meet people where they're at, this is a great attention getter. While more spiritually mature Christians might find it cheesy, or even simplistic to the point of being offensive, we want to approach outsiders in a way that shows them that we care, and that we're not that different from them.

I've thought about varied reactions churches receive with banners that read, “Looking for a sign from God? This is it!” In a similar way, it's overly simplistic, and doesn't tell anyone what your church is about, but we have to do that once we get the community to come through the door.

I have to say that I'm with Christopher here. We are created in the image of God, the same God who created everything around us. I don't think that he went to his divine Xerox and starte cutting and pasting because he couldn't think of anything more original or creative. Have we really stooped so low that the only thing that we can do is take some piece of pop culture and “Christianize” it?

At the same time, I've definitely seen worse advertisements. I'll at least give them kudos for an effort to connect. One small step for pop culture, one giant step for the local church.
